Silver lame is HORRIBLE.
Backstory: I volunteered to sew costumes for an event. Specifically, a costumed shopping cart race known as the Idiotarod. I said I would make 5 smoking jackets, blue velvet with silver lame lapels. This was in late december that I volunteered, and the race is Jan 27th
When did I start sewing these 5 blue velvet and silver lame jackets? Dear reader, it was yesterday. I sewed and sewed and by bedtime yesterday I had 5 jackets fully assembled. all I had to do was press them so the lapels looked nice and crisp, and hem them up.
This morning I fired up the iron. Gingerly, because I had a feeling that the lame might melt a little. One pass of the iron. Smooooooth. Second stroke of iron: lame melts onto iron, room fills with stench of burned/melted lame.
There has to be some magic trick for pressing meltable fabrics. Lacking that knowledge, however. I have resorted to basting the entire facing/collar/lapel into place. Two are basted (pictured). Three more to baste, all 5 to hem.
